Did you know that it’s National Breast Cancer Awareness month? MedHealth Urgent Care is joining forces to fight for the cause. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, was organized by major breast cancer charities in 1985 and is held the month of October each year. This month long campaign was organized to help raise awareness, get people educated, promote mammography, raise funding, and give support for those who are, or have been affected by breast cancer. What is Breast Cancer? Breast cancer is a tissue found in the breast and other parts of the body. Breast cancer occurs when the process of a cell goes wrong and new cells form when the body doesn’t need them, or when old damaged cells do not die as they should. When this happens, a build up of cells often forms a mass of tissue (a lump, growth, or tumor) and these cells can spread by breaking away from the tumor, entering into blood or lymph vessels, and then branch into tissues throughout the body. Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer found in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point.
